Couponing 101 Part 4: How I plan my shopping trip

Welcome back to my Couponing 101 series! In the previous post, I gave a list of all the places where I find the best deals. This post will outline my menu planning and shopping trip to give you an idea of how I do things. My meal planning takes about an hour, maybe longer if I just can't think of anything to make.

First, I check any immediate stock-up needs. This usually happens around Thursday each week. I check my milk, eggs, flour, and any other basic items I use throughout the week, and add them to my list if we need them.

On Friday, I check out the Meijer preview ad. The great thing about Meijer is that every Friday they post the next week's ad, both on Facebook and through email. This gives me a chance to decide whether I need to do my shopping Saturday, or wait until Sunday when the things I want go on sale. I've frequently done half my shopping at Meijer on Saturday, then go back Sunday to get things that weren't on sale the day before! Usually, once I see the preview ad and check out the deals, I'll go ahead and start my menu planning.

Next, I'll see what meals I can make using things in my pantry. I always keep basic items like pasta, salsa, rice, and sometimes diced tomatoes in the pantry, and I try to keep shredded cheese and pre-cooked black beans in the freezer (I'll show you how I cook dried beans in a future post!). This is usually enough to build on and just buy a couple things to make a complete meal.

Then I'll see what I can make using any couponing deals. I mainly do this with Meijer, but lately Kroger has had some very good sales so I've been going there often too! The Kroger ad runs Wednesday through Tuesday, so that helps me know when I need to do my shopping.

Everything else I buy at Aldi! Aldi is one of the most amazing grocery stores on the planet. It's small and simple, and usually so much cheaper than anywhere else. I buy most of my staples here: Flour, tortilla chips, canned items, bread, and now I'm starting to get all my produce there. There have been some weeks where there just aren't any good grocery deals, so I'll just do all my shopping at Aldi. Aldi doesn't accept coupons, but the savings are usually greater than if you were to use coupons at another store.

For bulk items, we go to Sam's Club. I absolutely love Sam's, but you just have to be careful because not everything is cheaper in bulk. At the moment, we buy all our toilet paper and paper towels there. We also buy the 5 pound bags of cheese, as well as ground turkey and chicken breasts. I can't find cheaper meat anywhere else, so we stock up every couple weeks.

By this time, I have a complete menu and shopping list created. We use Google Docs, which is great because John and I can access it anywhere and update it any time we remember something to add to the list. Each week, I plan for 6 dinners with the 7th night being leftovers. Since it's just the 3 of us and Allison is so small, we always have plenty of dinner leftovers to eat for lunch the next day, so there's never any need for me to spend extra money on lunches. I'll usually plan for one "special" breakfast that won't last the entire week; this could be biscuits and gravy or cinnamon rolls. The other days I just make sure we have extra pancakes in the freezer to heat up in the morning.

Next comes the shopping trip! I mentioned this above, but some weeks I split up my shopping into separate days, especially if I go to 3-4 different stores. Usually it'll be Friday night and then Saturday morning, but a lot of times I'll go Sunday after church. I also make sure I do most of my shopping alone! I know it can be hard especially if you have children. I'll usually go during her nap while John's home, or even early in the morning before she wakes up. It's just so much faster for me to get in and out without towing a toddler or getting suggestions of other things to add to the cart. =)

That's pretty much what happens each week!  Hope you enjoyed my Couponing 101 segment!  Any specific questions? Feel free to comment below!

Weekly shopping and menu for 2/22

Something happened this week that doesn't happen often. We had a lot of money left over after I made up the menu. Like, a lot more than I usually do. Part of it is because I'm cooking a 13-pound turkey that we had in the freezer, so I'm using that instead of chicken in almost all the recipes for this week. Pair that with cheap ingredients for each recipe, and there's suddenly an extra $25 to spend! Here's the breakdown.

Sam's Club
Here's what I chose to spend that excess money on:

Paper Towels: $16.48
Frozen blueberries: $6.98. This one was kind of an impulse buy, but I'll use it to put in our waffles and muffins this week.

Total Cost: $24.65

Kroger
Milk: $1.00
Coffee Creamer: $2.39 each, used a $1/2 coupon to make them $1.89 each!
2 cartons cottage cheese: $1.00 each
Sour cream: $1.00
2 bags Starbucks coffee: $3.99 each on the clearance shelf! This was a major impulse buy, and I saw I had a $2/2 coupon to make them only $2.99 each!
Applesauce: $2.19
4 boxes of pasta: $.69 each, used two $1/2 coupons to make each box only $.19!

Total Cost: $16.71

Aldi
French baguette: $1.49
Eggs: $1.79
Romaine lettuce: $1.99
Tortilla chips: $1.19
2 cans corn: $.49 each
2 cans kidney beans: $.59 each
5 cans cream of chicken soup: $.59 each
2 cans tomato paste: $.39 each
Frozen vegetables: $.89
Taco seasoning: $.35
Bacon bits: $1.39
Tomato juice: $1.29
Brown sugar: $1.19
Flour: $1.29! This is usually $1.59, so I may stock up in case it's a limited time price.
Greek yogurt: $3.89
Banana peppers: $1.49
Butter: $.69

Total Cost: $24.82

Weekly total: $66.18. We had a little extra money from last week so we'll only end up about $1 over budget.

Menu:
Turkey with Slow cooker mashed potatoes
Cheesy garlic chicken over spaghetti noodles
Leftovers plus French toast casserole for breakfast
Chili
King Ranch Chicken
Chicken and black bean soup
Chicken pot pie

Couponing 101 Part 3: How to find the best deals

Welcome back! Part 2 of the series explained where to get your coupons, and today I'll show you where and how I find all of my awesome deals!

General couponing sites: These are websites that posts deals from a huge variety of stores. They'll post items and any coupons that match up, with links to print if those coupons are printable. Make sure you Like them on Facebook too, because that's how you'll quickly print new and hot coupons! I also subscribe to their email list because sometimes I don't have time to check each blog every day. They'll have everything they've posted throughout the day conveniently located in one email. Here's a list of some of the sites I visit:

StockpilingMoms

Hip2Save

KrazyCouponLady

MoneySavingMom:  This site also has amazing recipes I use constantly! She also includes in her emails links to free Kindle books, some of which are couponing/frugal living books.

Store-specific sites: These are my favorites! These websites are specific to one store and will update daily with new coupons and deals to go along with them.

Kroger Krazy: I never used to like Kroger very much until I found this site. Kroger's always been too expensive, but the girls here show how to get the best deals! Kroger's Mega Sales are great if you plan wisely. The only thing to watch for is that they live in a different area from us, so their prices may not always be accurate, so pay attention when you actually do your shopping.

Meijer Madness: Another great site, because I love Meijer! These ladies also scout Meijer every week to find coupon match-ups.

At the store itself! I make sure to take my coupon envelope EVERYWHERE, because I never know when I'm going to find items on clearance. After Christmas, the seasonal coffee creamer went on clearance, and because I had my coupons already with me, I was able to save even more! I think I bought 6 bottles that day.

I use a combination of all of these each week to help me save the most amount of money! I check these sites every morning when I wake up to make sure I don't miss any coupons. Next week, I'll map out my entire grocery shopping process, from the menu planning to the store checkout!

I think I did pretty good this week! Things were a little tight because I spent more at Sam's than I usually do, so we're doing a few cheap meals. I don't usually shop at 4 stores for my trips, but when I do, I tend to spread it out over a couple days.

Couponing 101 Part 2: Five Places To Find Coupons

Welcome to part 2 of Couponing 101! Last time I introduced couponing and how to get started. Today's post explains where you can find coupons for your shopping trip. We live in an amazing time where coupons can be found almost everywhere! I've compiled a list of 5 places where I find most of my coupons.

Sunday newspaper- For about $2 a paper, you'll receive anywhere between 1 and 4 coupon inserts each week. Sometimes you'll get lucky and there will accidentally be extra inserts! I've found that for the most part, most of the coupons in the inserts are also found online. However, I still feel it's worth the money to get a weekly subscription, as the savings in coupons will pay for the paper and then some!

Coupon websites- This is my favorite way to get coupons! There are many sites exclusively for coupons, and you can print 2 of the same coupon per computer! Remember that most stores have a limit as to how many like coupons you can use for the same items, usually 4. This is the easiest way for me to save. Here are a few that I use often:

Coupons.com - As an additional way to save, sign up for a Swagbucks account and print coupons from there! It uses the coupons.com database, and for every coupon you redeem, you earn 10 Swagbucks that you can use toward redeeming gift cards!

Manufacturer websites- If you're looking for specific coupons but can't find them on the sites above, try going to the manufacturer's website! Most will have a section with coupons to print, and you should still be able to print 2 of each. Sign up for their newsletters and you may receive coupons through email, too. Here are a few I use:

Grocery stores- I mostly see this at Kroger, but you can probably find them at any grocery store. Check every aisle to see if there are any "Blinkie" machines which will dispense coupons that you may not be able to find anywhere else. Technically I suppose you can take as many as you want, but I only take two at a time to be fair. If I go back to the store another day and see they're still available, I'll usually take a couple more.

Digital coupons-What a great way to save money without using your printer! The two I use most often are Kroger and mPerks through Meijer.

Kroger- Most of the coupons on Kroger's website are the same as what you'd be able to print or find in the newspaper. However, I've also seen coupons for their store brand items. Every Friday Kroger releases a "freebie" coupon that you HAVE to clip that Friday, and it usually expires a couple weeks after you clip it.

mPerks- I absolutely LOVE mPerks! All you have to do is sign up with your phone number and a 4-digit PIN, and that's what you'll enter in the credit card reader when you check out. Much like Kroger, mPerks has coupons similar to what you'd find online or in a newspaper, but also has store brand coupons and will also release "freebie" coupons once or twice a month. In addition to coupons, mPerks also has a rewards system. You'll be able to start rewards like "Get $5 off your next order when you spend $30 in Produce", and you'll have 4 weeks from the day you start it to earn the reward. mPerks also offers Pharmacy rewards, which gives you $10 off your next order after every 5 prescriptions you fill, and Baby rewards, which gives you $10 off for every $100 you spend on Baby items.

Next in our series, I will talk about how to find the best deals when you're putting together your grocery list. Do you know of any other places you can find coupons? Post in the comments below!

Weekly shopping and menu for 2/8

This wasn't a great couponing week! There was just nothing great on sale, so I decided to do most of my shopping at Aldi. I was gonna do all of it there, but then I saw Kroger had great deals on milk and eggs, and I had a few digital coupons from Kroger for some free items.

Kroger
3 half gallons milk: $1.25 each
Eggs: $1.25- great price!
Pads- $2.59
Thomas bagels, Ragu pasta sauce, and Yoplait Greek yogurt: all FREE! Kroger always has a free Friday download, and will sometimes put digital coupons for free stuff in your account, so always keep an eye out!

Total: $7.78- 58% savings

Aldi
Frozen peas: $.89
Cheese ravioli: $2.49
Tater tots: $1.69
Whipped cream: $.89
Romaine lettuce: $1.99
Whipping cream $1.89
Mayo: $1.89
Cream of chicken soup: $.59
Sour cream: $.59
2 pounds carrots: $1.29
Tomato sauce: $.25
Onion powder: $.99
Croutons: $.89
Cottage cheese: $2.29
Celery: $1.19
2 cans tomato paste: $.78
Cheddar cheese soup: $.79
Broccoli: $1.79
Cauliflower: $1.79
2 cans crushed tomatoes: $1.90
3 pounds onions: $1.29
Sliced cheddar cheese: $1.99
Oatmeal: $2.29
2 cans tuna: $1.30
Wheat bread: $.50

Total: $34.93

Sams Club:
Can you tell we love cheese? =) A 5-pound bag is $11.49. Sams also sells ground turkey for $2.59 a pound, so we buy that instead of ground beef; we can't tell the difference. Both of these were free after using a $25 gift card I got from Swagbucks! We also bought 2 pillows for $10.

Weekly Total: $52.71
Under budget, yay! Although Aldi didn't have the parmesan cheese and black olives I wanted. John will go after work this week to see if another Aldi has it, but it'll only bring the total up by around $3.

Menu
I chose to challenge myself this year to use my slow cooker once a day this entire year! I'll usually do one breakfast, one dessert/bread, and 5 dinners/side items.

Sloppy joes
Parmesan tomato soup
Tuna melts with broccoli cauliflower gratin
Cheesy ravioli
Kraft mac and cheese, with Slow cooker pancake for breakfast
Tater tot casserole
Leftovers and Carrot cake
